She goes by Birdy. An Australian songstress with a set of pipes to kill and piano skills to beat. She's also only 16 years old and has her first album out already on iTunes and Amazon.com. She does mostly covers but a few are her own. Her next album will be all her own songs.
**Buy her debut album "Birdy"**
So I discovered this song last week and seriously haven't stopped listening to it since. I can already quote it.
Today was warmer out, 50 degrees, a sign that Spring is on it's way, we hope. We took full advantage of the foggy day and took some shots. Questions we were asked about these pictures were, "Were their cars? Where is this empty road?" The road is in fact totally functional and running but usually unused since it is a back road near farms. Whenever there was a car coming though we'd shout, "Car!" and quickly move out of the way. And as they'd drive by, slowing down a little when they approached us, we'd merely pretend to be taking pictures of trees and ditches instead of being two crazy girls taking fashion shots in the middle of the road in 50 degree weather. Well, "All for the sake of fashion" as Mackenzie says, and for all our lovely readers, whoever you may be.
Mad Men! I recently started watching this last month and I instantly got hooked. I can't put my finger on why I love it, its just addicting.
Excited about...
Downton Abbey, what can I say, it is beautiful, amazing, spectacular, and pretty much the greatest show ever. Hayley and I have waited forever to see season 3, we are two giddy screaming girls when it comes on. I would describe my thoughts on the new season but I don't was to spoil anything. This week we are going to bake some Downton Abbey inspired type food (scones maybe, do you have any ideas?) and drink herbal tea while enjoying the show. To get an idea of what we are like while watching Downton Abbey watch the video below (its hilarious!)
Reading...
Is everyone hanging out without me? by Mindy Kaling. I just finished this book and it was an awesome read. Mindy is a writer on The Office and I love the office so I knew I would enjoy it. It's very similar to Tina Fey's book. It's adorable, a fast funny read and I suggest it.
Thinking about...
Instead of reflecting on the past year I can't help but think of the year to come with college and moving away from family and friends, it's an exciting and nervous time.
Disliking...
Winter. It's very hard to take blog photos when it is 10 degrees outside. I have seen other bloggers take photos in the snow but I wonder how they do it. I think it is just too cold in Wisconsin.
Working on..
Surrealism! Hayley and I are taking a class on surrealism and dadaism and for the final project we (and another friend) created a Man Ray inspired film. I hate to brag but it's crazy good. This was our first film and it was a lot of work but really fun. We had no limits so we could create really cool scenes. I hope to put it on the blog soon.
Hey,
Is everyone in the Christmas spirit? It hasn't quite hit me. I still have a lot of shopping to do and have yet to decorate the house. The first Wisconsin snow came this week and was so pretty! I am hoping to take some photos next time it snows at a local park. The snow makes me want to wear huge scarves and sweaters. I feel I am losing my style or getting lazy, but when you wake up and it is pitch black and freezing outside it's hard to put on a nice dress. Anyway I realized I had not posted these photos but they are a couple weeks old. (P.S. The coat I am wearing is one of my favorite articles of clothing.)
I'm going to college for graphic design. Plain and simple. I was browsing the Internet the other day and found these posters. I am a huge fan of of these minimalist movie posters, and minimalist art in general, and Hayley and I were looking at them while in a surrealism/dadaism class. Here are a few of my favorites:
A good friend of ours is currently writing a novel. It is a fantastic book that we are editing/ giving feedback. I can't say to much about it, but it is supernatural, literally.
Listening to...
Skyfall by Adele. Hayley is sitting next to me now and we just watched the music video, I want to go see the movie just to hear the song play in the background. That would be epic!
Waiting for...
Downton Abbey, enough said.
Wanting to see...
Anna Karenina, we wrote a post about it earlier for more info.
Wearing...
Eachothers clothes. For the past week Hayley, Erika, and I have been mixing and matching eachothers clothes.
While Hayley and I were taking these photos we couldn't help but think we look like true Wisconsin red necks. Especially with my patched jeans on and standing next to a tractor. HaHa! But these patched flannel jeans are my all time favorite pair of pants. They are so comfy and have inspired me to patch up other dated jeans of mine. My friends always say I don't own "normal people jeans." Oh well. I also get made fun of by my family for watching red neck shows, like my Big Red Neck Vacation and Swamp People then suddenly start watching Downton Abbey right after. But I can't help it that I love both ends of the spectrum.
The funny thing is that Hayley and I didn't even plan to match, it just happened. About two days a week we end up matching without even any planning. Its kind of funny.
I found this old bike in the field next to the tractor. It made my day! I have an obsession with vintage bikes. I really want to get one or a replica of an old bike, for college. It was to bad the one in the field was too old and broken to repair.
Hi, this weekend I will be going to pick out pumpkins and bake apple pies! I am super excited. And Hayley will be putting on freaky make-up and scaring people at a haunted house. Such wonderful fall activities! What are your fall traditions or favorite activities?
I can't wait to see this! It has all my favorite actors in it. The director also made the movies Atonement and Pride and Prejudice two of my all time favorite movies which are both stunning. This movie just looks simply beautiful with the costumes, set, music and story line (Tolstoy of course!) I am just so excitied!
I always love going to Chicago. Seeing the museums, eating wonderful food, and just being in a huge city for a change.
Have you ever been to Chicago? Any advice?
We're thinking of going to the art museum and to the beach. I can't wait to share the pictures with you all after we get back. But for now I'll share a picture of the Chicago World Fair in 1893. It was clearly called the 'White City' for a reason.
P.S. You have to read this book about the Worlds Fair in Chicago in 1893. It is one of my favorite books of all time! The title totally sums it up: murder, magic, and the madness that changed America.
So I will be heading up north for the next couple days and I can't wait! Up north is one of my favorite, if not my favorite place on earth. Everyone is so relaxed and you just hang out, swim and eat. And I always come back with some crazy stories from my family. So I thought it would be fun to share a crazy s'more recipe. Now, this is a rare treat because I don't cook at all. I even burn water. No joke. But I can make a pretty mean s'more.
Here's what I add every once in a while:
Sugar cookies
Melon
Soma girl scout cookies
Cookie dough
Strawberry short cake
I know they sound odd, but they are awesome! Try them out!
Back in December Kenzie, our great friend Amber, and I all bought tickets for a concert in Chicago. The band is Coldplay. Maybe some of you have heard of them, maybe not. They are THE BEST, in my personal opinion. My favorite band for many years. We leave in a week and we couldn't be more excited. It's all of our first live concert to see.
We used neon fabric paint because Coldplay's newest album cover is very bright and florescent.
Black shirts were also an obvious choice so the paint would stand out more.
B e f o r e
To get a better splatter effect we mixed a SMALL amount of water with the paint. Enough to make it a little thicker then the consistency of milk.
Stir everything together with your fingers then flick it all over the shirt. You can use a spoon or paint brush or whatever but I have always found that getting your hands a little dirty makes it a lot more fun.
